A MUST SEE EVENT FOR THOMPSON DIVIDE COALITION SUPPORTERS GASLAND IS SHOWING AT THE WHEELER IN ASPEN THURSDAY, AUGUST 26TH AT 5:15 P.M. What is MOUNTAINSUMMIT? For over thirty years, Mountainfilm in Telluride has been America's premier adventuring film festival, blazing the trail that other outdoor-sports festivals have copied but never equaled. In recent years Mountainfilm has shifted its focus towards issues that affect us all yet still celebrate the triumph of indomitable spirit, taking on topics as far-reaching as the extinction crisis, adventure, and protection of public lands. Together in partnership with the Wheeler Opera House, Aspen residents and guests can now experience Mountainfilm's uniquely fresh and funky approach to putting audiences together with artists, newsmakers, icons, and characters for four days of what Mountainfilm festival director David Holbrooke calls "good films and good conversations." MountainSummit is an end-of-summer celebration of indomitable spirit through extraordinary documentary films, lectures, art exhibits, breakfast talks, and a must-attend symposium on The Sixth Extinction. This four-day feast for the eye and the intellect will bring some of the most creative minds and remarkable stories to town. And unlike other film festivals, many of the documentaries will bring along members of their creative teams, who will interact with the festival audience all through the weekend. Thursday evening will feature a screening of the inspiring film Gasland, along with a post-film discussion with the director, Josh Fox. The program will begin at 5:15pm on Thursday, August 26 at the Wheeler. Tickets for this unforgettable event are just $12 each. However, the Wheeler Opera House would like to invite friends of Thompson Divide Coalition to enjoy this incredible program for a discount. We know it is an event you would happily pay full price for, but to sweeten the pot, friends of Thompson Divide Coalition can receive a ticket for Gasland for 20 percent off the regular ticket price: a $12 ticket for just $10. When you call the box office to order your tickets, mention the code MSUMMIT. Tickets and festival passes are now available from Aspen Show Tickets at the Wheeler at www.aspenshowtix.com or (970) 920-5770. In addition to Gasland, Thompson Divide Coalition supporters may also enjoy the Sunday evening showing of Bag It. More information about this program, and the entire MountainSummit schedule, is available here: www.mountainfilminaspen.org Gasland
It's said that the US is the Saudi Arabia of natural gas. Pennsylvanian Josh Fox got a letter offering $100,000 if he would let a natural gas company drill on his pristine rural land. He was tempted but wanted to find out more. What he discovered is the stuff of nightmares: Pools of toxic waste, disfigured and dead animals, and ignitable kitchen faucets. With natural gas exploration booming again in Western Colorado, this essential viewing for anyone who cares about the future of our lands, our drinking water, and our children. Updates from the Thompson Divide Coalition: THANK YOU to everyone who sent their comments to the White River National Forest for the Environmental Impact Study (EIS) prior to July 30, 2010. Stay tuned for more updates on the process and the timeframe for additional comments. THANK YOU to everyone who sent letters of support to Rep. John Salazar on behalf of the Thompson Divide Coalition. His contact information is on the TDC website so please continue to write your letters of support. Please write letters of support to the Garfield County Board of County Commissioners as they need to know you support the TDC mission. The Thompson Divide Protection Bill includes 43,500 acres in Garfield County so there is a great opportunity for our communities to be impacted by oil and gas development should the industry proceed with drilling. Please let Commissioners Houpt, Martin and Samson know you want them to support the introduction of the TDC Bill by Rep. John Salazar as soon as possible. Keep checking www.savethompsondivide.org for the latest updates and of upcoming events! Thank you again for your ongoing support!! |

CHC protests leases near Paonia Reservoir
CHC recently filed a protest with the Bureau of Land Management of two parcels near Paonia Reservoir offered in its August 12 minerals lease auction. The parcels total nearly 800 acres and one parcel is located approximately one-quarter of a mile west of the reservoir.
The BLM is basing decisions to lease on guiding documents that are over 20 years old. Much has changed since then with organic farming, ranching and vineyards becoming an increasingly important part of our economy. Meanwhile the current method of extracting natural gas through the process know as hydraulic fracturing has increased, a process that was not in wide use nor considered when the agency determined what lands were suitable to lease. Paonia Reservoir supplies much of our irrigation water and contamination of our water resources by natural gas development has the potential to cause devastating impacts on the livelihood of farmers and ranchers, as well as harming the health of people.
In May, CHC protested the lease auction of two parcels in the Surface Creek area. Gunnison Energy won the bid, but as a result of our protest, the BLM did not issue the leases. Instead, the agency announced that it will prepare an Environmental Assessment of the leases. The National Environmental Policy Act requires that environmental impacts must be considered and that the public has an opportunity for input. We'll keep you informed when there is an opportunity for public comment on these leases once the environmental analysis is completed. |

Help Save the Thompson Divide
Help keep our backcountry lands just the way they are. The Thompson Divide Coalition is Western Colorado ranchers, farmers, hunters, fishermen, recreationalists, conservationists and community leaders working to protect 221,500 acres of land west of the Crystal River and on both sides of McClure Pass from oil and gas development. Learn MoreDelta County Commissioners Need to Hear from You The Delta County Commissioners need to hear from you. Urge them to support the Thompson Divide proposal. The Thomson Divide Coalition will meet with the Delta County Commissioners Monday, Aug. 16th to ask for their support of this important proposal. click to email, call or write the Delta County Commissioners: Bruce Hovde 874-2100 X2112 Delta County BOCC Olen Lund 874-2100 X2113 501 Palmer Street Jan McCracken 874-2100X2111 Delta, CO 81416 **Ask them to support the legislation proposed by the Thomson Divide Coalition that will allow oil and gas leases in the Thompson Divide area - including 7,700 federal acres and 4 leases in Delta County - to be retired, donated, exchanged or purchased for conservation.
Tell the Commissioners to support the proposal because:
**The Thompson Divide area is most valuable today and for future generations if it's left just the way it is.
**Clean water and air, and maintaining our rural agricultural heritage, recreation and hunting activities are vital to Delta County's economy. Oil and gas development will have negative impacts on these important values.
**Delta County is one of the most productive organic farming regions in the country thanks to the North Fork Valley. The high countryincluded in the Thompson Divide Coalition's proposal supplies irrigation water for these farms as well as summer range for ranchers.
**The Thomson Divide area attracts hunters, anglers, horseback riders, hikers, climbers and winter enthusiasts to our communities. The value of these activities is greater than the potential value of oil and gas development in the area.
**Tell them why keeping the land as it's currently being used in important to you, your livelihood or your business.
**Include any knowledge you may have about the Huntsman Ridge/Clear Fork/Muddy Creek area and why it's important to you. |
